Press Release Body = To the average radio listener, it seems these days that commercial stations in the greater Seattle-Tacoma market gear their efforts toward two things: Playing commercials and changing their format every few months. Jet City Radio, an internet-only radio station in Tacoma, Washington still believes in the seemingly lost "public service" approach towards its listeners and has become the first radio station in the Seattle-Tacoma market to provide real-time, 24 hour a day AMBER Alerts to its listeners. "Research by Arbitron and other sources show commercial radio listenership is dropping and the forecast is for that to continue; now commercial stations are scrambling to stop the bleeding," says John Lyman, owner of Jet City Radio. "Part of the reason is commercial radio stations have forgotten that part of operating a radio station involves being a 'public servant.' 20 years ago, commercial radio stations played PSA's (Public Service Announcements) on a regular basis. It was assumed that part of a station's job was to serve the public. Now, commercial stations mainly serve the corporate interests that own them and have forgotten the needs of their listeners. Jet City Radio is a station that still puts the listener first and that's why we provide real-time, AMBER Alerts 24 hours a day whenever an alert is issued." Jet City Radio's format consists of top 40 hits from the 60's and 70's; streaming live 24 hours a day-seven days a week at www.jetcityradio.com from it's studio in Tacoma. Working in cooperation with RadioAmber.net, Jet City Radio is able to receive and broadcast AMBER alerts within minutes of an alert being issued. Whenever an alert is issued anywhere in the United States, the alert is fed into Jet City Radio's internet broadcast stream and played once an hour at 40 minutes past each hour. The AMBER Alert is named after 9-year-old Amber Hagerman of Arlington, Texas. In January 1996, she was abducted and was brutally murdered. While the details of the suspect were provided to the police, there was no system to quickly inform the community about Amber's disappearance. Through significant community effort, local media was asked to devise a plan to immediately broadcast abduction information. In remembrance of Amber, her name became the nationally recognized acronym for the AMBER Alert (America's Missing Broadcast Emergency Response). The AMBER Alert system is a proven success and has helped rescue more than 230 children nationwide. More than 85 percent of those recoveries have occurred since AMBER Alert became a nationally coordinated effort in 2002.
